At the 2008 Beijing Paralympics David Weir, Shelley Woods and Mickey Bushell achieved greatness using the Draft Mistral racing wheelchair.
Despite a debilitating illness David came back with 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. With gold medals in the 800 and 1500 metres, silver in the 400 and bronze in the 5000 metres David achieved more than we could have hoped for after contracting the illness. Going down with a virus just before the games started, he showed true British bulldog attitude and a life time ambition of gold at the Paralympics especially the blue ribbon event the 1500 metres. After the event David praised the medical staff and coach Pete Wyman and thanked them for getting him to the start line despite the virus. I think David can also praise himself.
Despite having to re-run the 5000 metres after a huge crash in the first race, Shelley came through to take a hard earned bronze and then caped it off with a phenomenal silver in a tight 1500 metres beating other world class athletes and coming second to the great Canadian Chantal Petitclerc. It is a complement to Shelley that she kept her focus in the 5000 as she had finished in a medal position in the first race only to have it taken from her and told that through no fault of her own the race would be re-run.
As a fairly rookie athlete Mickey did superbly to take silver in the 100 metres T53. At 90 metres Mickey had the race won but was piped on the line by Josh George of the USA. With more experience and 4 more years training Mickey is 1 to watch at London 2012.
All 3 were delighted with their achievements and praised the Draft Mistral.
