Overview of Wheelchair Tennis
Wheelchair tennis is one of the forms of tennis adapted for those who have disabilities in their lower bodies. The size of courts, balls, and rackets are same, but there are two major differences from pedestrian tennis;
- The use of specially designed wheelchairs
- The ball may bounce up to two times. The second bounce may also occur outside of the field
This is one of the official Paralympic sports and also played at Grand Slams. There are three categories;
- Men
- Ladies
- Quads (Quads is the category for those with quadriplegia and it is sometimes called Mixed especially at Paralympic Games. Quads players can hold rackets taped to the hand and use electric-powered wheelchairs.
- Each category has singles and doubles tournaments.
Tennis Wheelchairs
For tennis wheelchairs adjustability is a key requirement. The following features will often be required within a chair (especially those who will be new to the sport)
- Adjustable front and rear seat heights,
- Centre-of-gravity, footrest angle/ height, backrest angle/height and anti-tip.
- The Tennis Wheelchair should be available in a frame height to suit you
- Anti-tip/5th wheel: Fixed single swiveladjustable height
- Fixed back
- Adjustable back height
- Adjustable tension back upholstery
- Adjustable Center-of-Gravity
- Fixed camber 15Ëš, 18Ëš or 20Ëš
- High performance wheels to allow improved manouverability
- High pressure clincher tires
- Fork caster system and super hard casters
- Platform footrest: Adjustable height, angle and fore/aft
- Detachable and adjustable height swivel anti-tip bar
