Wheelchair Maintenance And Trouble Shooting

Wheelchair Maintenance Suggested Minimum Schedule

Wheelchair Maintenance As required

  • If your wheelchair should get wet, please dry it afterwards
  • To clean your wheelchair please consult manufactures handbook to see what can be used (Typically only mild household cleaners should be used). Click here for information on wheelchair maintenance products and accessories

Wheelchair Maintenance every 4 weeks

  • Check the wheelchair tyre pressures (the correct tyre pressure should be printed on on the surface of the tyre)
  • Check the tyres for wear and damage (look out for cracks on the inner or outer surface,or any embedded objects)
  • Check the brakes to make sure that they are working properly and importantly that they are easy to use
  • Check all nuts, fixings are securely in place

Wheelchair Maintenance every 8 weeks

  • A small amount of sewing machine oil should be applied to quick release axles

Wheelchair Maintenance every 12 weeks

  • The moveable joints that are critical to your wheelchair  safety are secured by self locking nuts. Check that these are secure. Safety nuts should only be used once and replaced after use

Wheelchair maintenance every 6 months or 12 months

  • Depending on the frequency and type of use, you should consider taking your wheelchair to an authorised dealer to have it maintained by trained engineers

Wheelchair Trouble Shooting

  • Wheelchair pulls to one side
    • check tyre pressure
    • check to make sure wheel turns easily (bearings / axle)
    • check angle of castors
    • check to make sure both castors are making proper contact with the ground
  • Castors begin to wobble
    • check angle of castors
    • check to make sure all bolts are secure; tighten if necessary (check the manufacturers details for torque settings)
    • check to make sure both castors are making proper contact with the ground
  • Wheelchair squeaks and rattles
    • check to make sure all bolts are secure; tighten if necessary (check the manufacturers details for torque settings)
    • Apply a small amount of lubrication to spots where movable parts come into contact with one another
  • Wheelchair wobbles
    • check angle of castors
    • check tyre pressure
    • check to see if rear wheels are adjusted differently
